Earlier chapters

Real estate, franchising and consumer brands

By the age of 32, I had built and sold my first company. Throughout my career I've been involved in real estate development, franchising, consumer businesses and the home services industry.

Real Estate Investor & Custom Home Builder

Real Estate & Custom Homes

My business career began with buying, renovating and selling residential properties. That grew into building custom homes and speculative residential construction: finding opportunities, assembling teams, managing projects and creating something tangible.

Franchise Owner & Northeast Business Manager

Cold Stone Creamery

In 2002 I became a Cold Stone Creamery franchise owner and served as its Northeast Business Manager during a period of rapid growth, gaining valuable experience in franchise operations, business development and regional management.

CEO

LOAFR Premier Footwear

A consumer-focused footwear business built around product identity, brand recognition and customer experience. It broadened my view of entrepreneurship and showed me how much branding, marketing and customer relationships matter.

What I believe

The fundamentals every good business shares

Strong leadership

Set the example and take responsibility for the outcome.

Financial discipline

Manage finances responsibly and adapt when circumstances change.

Quality

Quality products and services, delivered with care.

The customer

A real commitment to the people you serve.

On setbacks

Not every business venture has been successful. I've experienced setbacks, difficult partnerships, financial challenges, and situations where things didn't work out as planned.

But I've never believed that a setback defines a person. What matters is how you respond, what you learn, and whether you're willing to get back up and try again.

I also believe in mentoring and sharing experiences with people who are interested in entrepreneurship. If something I've learned can help another person make a better decision, I consider that worthwhile.
